Since 1863, Pilgrim Baptist Church has been a pillar of faith, resilience, and service in the heart of Saint Paul, Minnesota. Founded by formerly enslaved people seeking a place to worship freely and with dignity, our church has stood the test of time—not only as a historical landmark but as a living, thriving community of believers.
Today, we honor that powerful legacy by continuing to grow in faith, serve with love, and welcome all who seek spiritual connection, purpose, and community.
A Rich History of Faith and Freedom
Pilgrim Baptist Church is proud to be the first African American Baptist congregation in Minnesota. Our early members—led by Rev. Robert Hickman—were formerly enslaved individuals who arrived in Saint Paul with courage, conviction, and hope.
From humble beginnings in homes and rented halls to the beautiful Romanesque Revival building we’ve called home since 1928, our story is woven into the history of Saint Paul. We were a voice during the Civil Rights Movement, an anchor for our neighborhood, and a place of worship, learning, and healing for generations.
