Position Summary:

We are seeking a Director of Music who will lead with excellence, humility, and a heart for ministry. The Director of Music will serve as a spiritual and creative leader, guiding the musical worship life of Pilgrim Baptist Church. This role blends musical proficiency, pastoral sensitivity, and organizational skill to cultivate worship experiences that glorify God, uplift the congregation, and reflect the church’s mission of unity, service, and praise. The Director of Music is responsible for creating an atmosphere of celebration and reverence to God through music for all Worship Service Experiences. The Director of Music must demonstrate proven capabilities to partner with the Music and Fine Arts Ministries, Sound Technician and Music Committee Members to embrace and enhance this atmosphere and support the music worship goals as expressed by the Senior Pastor of Pilgrim Baptist Church. The Director of Music reports to the Senior Pastor of Pilgrim Baptist Church.

Key Responsibilities

Worship Leadership

  • Plan and lead music for Sunday services, special observances (e.g., Advent, Resurrection Sunday, Church Anniversary), and community events.
  • Collaborate with the Pastor to select music that aligns with sermon themes and spiritual focus.

 

Choir & Ensemble Direction

  • Plan, organize and lead the music ministry for the Mass, Praise, Men’s and Youth choirs of Pilgrim Baptist Church.
  • Partner closely with designated volunteer appointed by the Senior Pastor, to organize rehearsals, provide musical coaching, and foster spiritual encouragement.

 

Musical Administration

  • Maintain music library, instruments, and sound equipment.
  • Partner closely with designated volunteer appointed by the Senior Pastor to coordinate scheduling, communication, and logistics for music ministry activities.

 

Community Engagement

  • Encourage congregational participation through diverse musical styles including traditional hymns, gospel, and contemporary worship.
  • Support music initiatives, nurturing future generations of worship leaders.

 

Spiritual Leadership

  • Model Christ-like character and servant leadership.
  • Foster a prayerful, collaborative, and joyful atmosphere within the music ministry.

 

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in vocal and/or instrumental music (skilled at playing the piano and organ strongly preferred).
  • Experience directing choirs or worship teams in a church setting.
  • Familiarity with Baptist worship traditions and openness to blended styles.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with clergy, volunteers, and diverse age groups.
  • Commitment to spiritual growth and the mission of Pilgrim Baptist Church.

 

Time Commitment & Compensation

  • Part-time (10–15 hours/week), including Sundays and midweek rehearsals.
  • Compensation commensurate with experience and church budget includes paid planning time and special services.
